Kayne shook his head. "It's difficult to explain. I wouldn't let her get too close, I have no doubt she could snap you in half without breaking a sweat. But she's dressed...like a normal person. She's expressive. I've never seen her like that."
He perked up when Reggie started talking weapons and jobs. He flipped through the file Reggie handed him. It looked easy enough. The rebel base being on a mountain would be a small challenge, but they were picking on farmers, which indicated that they either lacked true strength or guts. It would be like squishing insects. Easy money.
He gestured to the other two files. "What else do you have?"

Reggie handed the other two files over. They involved more then same here they were doing. They would sale their services to the one who ordered first. The Central American one was an introduction. These two were strictly cartel workers. They were also traps if Kayne read into them. They were mad and wanted revenge. The cartels were stupid.
“If you take either of those I’m asking for full payment up front. It’s not that I think you’ll die. It’s just when you take either one I’ll be at fallback point one. Which means you’ve succeeded in pissing off the cartels. Im fine with it. I mean if they want to see how many people they’d be feeding to a grinder by sending them after you. That’s their problem. Eventually I’ll send an anonymous package to the DEA and let them break this up. That’s the only reason we’re here is because our bigger paycheck is coming from someone who has a lot of money to spend for you to end this nonsense. Oh and they lost something to these clowns too.”
Reggie didn’t doubt Kayne’s ability but he also knew the cartels would use people to end him. Which was their loss of people power. Kayne didn’t let little things like number of people slow him down. He laughed as he started to look for other possible jobs. He had to eat to and his was cyber warfare for his disciplines.

Kayne scanned the other two files. It was tempting, both of those cases were right up his alley, but he could see the traps for what they were. Which meant he would only have to tread a little more carefully. Reggie was right, he had pissed off a lot of people. And while the cartels were not exceptionally bright, he knew better than to underestimate them.
No, best to begin with the first file. He slid the other two files to the side and opened the first file again, giving the documents within a closer look. "When can you be ready?" he asked, not looking up as he studied the file's contents. He could be ready to go in a matter of minutes, but he knew that normal people needed things like sleep every 16 hours or so.

Reggie looked at his watch and nodded. He spun the laptop to face him and after a few movements and clicks he closed the laptop and stood up.
“Well we need to be into Texas in four hours. The sooner we arrive the sooner we leave. I confirmed our participation in the issue resolution department. They have already optioned half our payment. I’ve arrange less than legal travel as in the helicopter we need. So you drive and I’ll sleep if I need it. I’m your pilot. I trust that isn’t an issue?”
He grabbed his bag and motioned Kayne to the door.

Kayne gave Reggie a predatory smile. "Trust me, you'd know if it was going to be an issue." He swiped the keys of the table as he stood, leaving the apartment after Reggie and locking up tight behind him. He entered a location near their destination on the SUV's navigation system. At this time of night the city's streets were virtually empty of people, allowing Kayne to be a little more liberal with his disregard for traffic laws as he made his way to the highway. Four hours? He figured he could probably make it in three. Maybe less.

Reggie did sleep after about an hour of Kayne driving and the desert did tend to put people to sleep. After what would be called three hours because Kayne was a man literally on a mission Reggie woke up.
“Oh good we’re”, Reggie glanced at his watch as he rubbed sleep from his eyes, “almost there. How was the desert? Endless sea of sand punctuated by the odd roadkill?
He chuckled as he finished rubbing his eyes and looked out the window. He hadn’t slept like that since the time he had flown in country. He noticed Kayne seemed to be the same. Locked on and ready for anything. Guy didn’t sleep much but he was a hell of an asset. He was glad he woke up because the location he gave Kayne was wrong so they needed to take a side road.
“In five miles take the side road on the right.”

A wry smile tugged at the corner of Kayne's mouth as he glanced at Reggie. "Stimulating," he said in response to Reggie's rhetorical question. "I'd ask how your nap was, but your snoring told me enough."
Kayne shut off the navigation system before the annoying lady in the machine started bitching at him about making U-turns and redirecting as Reggie began providing him directions.

Kayne followed directions quickly and after another thirty minutes of driving they arrived at a defunct looking airfield. That hanger looked to be barely hanging on to life but a small pit building sever hundred meters off the hanger showed signs of maintenance. After Kayne stopped the vehicle Reggie nodded.
“Good…they can follow instructions. They left all the stuff we need in the hanger and we can take the car to the outbuilding. It’s a garage for our vehicles. Let’s load our gear on the helicopter.”
Reggie didn’t wait as he grabbed his bag and headed toward the hanger door. He opens it to reveal a helicopter. Blackhawk to be exact but modified. It seemed to be modified for a role but it had. O weapons.
“Give me your gear I’ll load it while you put the jeep in the outbuilding.”

Kayne left the vehicle idling as he got his bag out of the car and shouldered it. He followed Reggie into the dilapidated hangar. He took a moment to admire their new ride, then cast a sideways glance at Reggie, wondering if the guy could actually pilot this thing, or if he'd learned on some puttering old chopper used for tours.
The lack of visible weapons on the 'hawk was interesting. He handed his bag to Reggie when he asked for it and went back to the jeep. Once it was safely tucked away in the out building he jogged back over to the hanger. He was almost afraid of breathing too hard within the structure, considering the thing looked like one flap of a butterfly's wing too close to it would send it crumbling down around them.
He hoisted himself into the helicopter and took a seat, grabed the nearby headset, and hooked the toe of his boot through the strap of his bag, pulling it closer so he could start gearing up.
"How far away is the drop off point?"

Reggie had strapped the gear in and was using a small but powerful motorized hand truck to get the chopper out of the hanger. The amazing news was Reggie managed to open the hanger doors and leave them intact. He got the chopper in place and smiled at Kayne as he started the engine. He went through all preflight and as the whine started to grow louder he put on his head set.
“You know I’ll never get the feeling of flying out of my system. I at first thought maybe special forces. That didn’t help at all as I did my training and it couldn’t keep me from wanting to fly.”
The roar of the engine was at full flight speed and Reggie lazily took the helicopter into the air and gained low altitude and stopped.
“It’s a three hour flight because I have to dodge Mexican Air Force ATC and we have to land for fuel and to get armed. We have to get into El Salvador for our refuel and armament and then into the Ecuador. That’s another two from there and we will be going to assault the rebels base and claim it as ours. I’ve surveyed the satellite images and you can look at them on the computer that’s between our seat. You can pick your drop zone.”
He started off toward their destination keeping an a roving eye across his instruments, the sky, and anything else that could be a threat.

Kayne eyed Reggie curiously as he slipped on his wraparound shades before turning his attention to the computer between them, flipping through the images. Kayne never would have pegged Reggie for an ex-military guy. The more he thought about it, though, the more he realized that it made sense, when he considered things that he had previously overlooked.
Despite the other man's nerdy exterior, there were small details that Kayne was surprised he hadn't put together. Of course, he hadn't much cared to learn or know much about his handler. He was a loner by nature, only working with people out of necessity, and could count the number of interpersonal relationships he had on one hand.
Had he been paying attention from the beginning, he would have realized Reggie had a military background. The man was fit, unlike many others his age. The way he carried himself, his tactical knowledge...Kayne wasn't used to feeling like an idiot, but he was kicking himself for not putting it together sooner.
"How long has it been since you last flew?"

Reggie hadn’t expected the question but Kayne had been primarily up front with him so he would give him that answer.
“Last time was eight months ago. It was terrible. I was doing air tours until I ran into an old friend. He was the one who introduced me to our trade. I had just retired from military service.”
He laughed about the joke of career military having normal lives. You just didn’t get wired back to regular life. He had don’t combat mission, insertions, and extractions. Hot LZs weren’t a problem. He would get you out. That is why he would have appreciated a door gunner. Alas not to be. He had no family and might as well put his skills to use.
“This is a well honed skill. I would have thrown this skill out if not for an easy life. That’s not for me. This is, the thrill of flight and what comes with running support for on call targets. I’ve marked a few. I think their emplacements from satellite photos. Survey and call on me to nail them.”
Reggie had wanted this job to get out of the states. The idea of travel was nice. So this mission was right up his alley.
“I got you some new kit. We’ll pick it up when we refuel and get armed.”

Kayne pictured Reggie giving air tours day after day to obnoxious tourists and coughed to cover up a laugh that tried to escape. Having spent his entire life from birth until a few months ago in the military, he couldn't related to what it meant to have a "normal life." This sort of thing, what he did now, WAS normal for him. The only difference was he didn't have to take orders from anyone else, and damn was that liberating.
He didn't know what he would have done if he hadn't been put in contact with Reggie. He knew less than nothing about leading a civilian life. He barely knew how to interact with civilians. Navigating his interactions with Reggie, even, was difficult in the beginning. But being able to do what he was good at, all while staying off a certain American military division's radar, put him in his comfort zone.
Kayne perked a brow and looked at Reggie when he mentioned new gear. "What's wrong with my current gear?"

“Your gear? Nothing if we were continuing operations in a desert locale. This is jungle so I’ve optioned some lighter breathable gear that doesn’t sacrifice protection. That’s all.”
Reggie had to take care of his people. That meant getting them the right gear for AO. That meant ensuring weapons and gear were chosen for their operations.
“Some of the stuff we will have loaded will be supplied and fuel for when we take the base from these rebels. It also allows us to have an area that can’t be reached easily should our new sponsors decide they don’t need us any longer.”

Kayne shot Reggie a sideways glance and a vicious grin. "That would be the last mistake they ever make." He returned his attention back to the satellite images, studying them for a few moments longer before settling on his drop zone. "Here," he said, turning the laptop so Reggie could see it. "Drop me here." The location was clear enough for a clean drop, close enough to his target, but far enough away to avoid unwanted attention. The short hike up the mountain to get to the base would be cake.
