Hope looked to him with awe as he grabbed her dish to place it into the kitchen. He was attentive and kind, which isn't something she was used to. She took in his mannerisms and made note of the way he carried himself. He was put together and walked with a certain grace. He wasn't from here, from what she gathered at least. She noticed how he stopped cold when she teased about falling in love with him "Awe, Jeff, relax. I was only teasing." she smiled as she wrapped a blanket over her. The woman wasn't used to the cold and she had hitch-hiked to New York before the first cold snap.
When he questioned why she stopped surfing, she frowned. She barely knew this man, but there was a vibe of trust lingering in the air. She felt comfortable with this man. "I was given no choice, actually." he already knew she as a mutant from the fact that they'd met at Ace. "I'll be frank and if this freaks you out, I'll leave." she announced plainly. "My parents realized my abilities and thought I was a troubled child." she sighed heavily, grabbing her coffee to take a long sip "I was taken to an insane asylum to get rid of my 'sickness'. They told me that I was going to get help and come back to them. I was taken on my 16th birthday and never saw them again." she spoke solemnly while staring at the falling snow. "When I was there, I was drugged, beaten and assaulted. I escaped about 5 months ago. I hitch-hiked to New York and haven't looked back since..."

Jeff wasn’t one to let things stop him but the whole love thing had done it for a fraction of a second and it had been noticed by Hope. She quickly said she was teasing which allowed him to relax again and continue what he was doing, which happened to be throwing some small pieces of wood on the embers of the dying fire.
“I figured as my animal magnetism seems to attract only people who want to kill me.”
He chuckled and gave a few pokes of it out of habit and left it alone as he took his chair where he could see the window. He took his eyes off the window and his study of the street that could be mistaken for being mesmerized by the falling snow. He wasn’t but he turned his attention to Hope as she spoke of how the people who were supposed to protect, raise, and guide her through life violated that bond and left her to the hands of strangers. That was fully destroyed by the way the strangers tried to cure her.
“I’m not freaked out on the least. It sounds like despite that horrible experience you escaped and have found a place to find out who you are again. I’m impressed by you.”
He was impressed by her, escape from an institution and then hitch hiking to New York. He was truly impressed and wanted to ask but refrained from asking. A simpler question would suffice.
“How do you like New York in the winter?”

Hope wrapped herself into the largely knit blanket on the couch before taking another sip of coffee. Staring out at the snow, she smiled at the quietness of it. "What is it that you do, anyway?" she asked with curiosity. Giving a smirk, she used her abilities to removing the coffee from her cup, floating it above and twirling it into a circle in the air. "I'm not a fan, honestly. The cold...the bitter, bitter cold hurts my bones." she laughed "I sound like an old lady, but it's true. I miss the warmth, the sun and the beach." she sighed heavily
"And you can ask my anything, Jeff, really..." she smiled sweetly "Despite the horrible things in the past, I know there is still kindness out there. And you've shown me that you're not a sociopath or psychopath; therefore, I trust you." she giggled.
