The Zones, a peaceful place where humans live. It’s R1K’s solution to the rampant disease she called mutants. They are what you would expect from a place that was created for just one purpose and it is to keep humans with humans and away from mutants. They are patrolled by Sentinels and it is kept this way to provide a sense of safety the world hasn’t had since she began her work to purge the plague of mutants. They move about their lives with a purpose and freedom they didn’t know wasn’t freedom. It was about to get a lot less peaceful very soon. That would be a change for them and it may not be something they are used to or have seen before today and may not see for a while after.
Jeff looked at Hope as they waited for night to fall. The water was cool but nice and he wondered why she didn’t feel the receding heat at all. He wasn’t as troubled as most thought he had been when he was still a land dweller. He hadn’t been called that for a good decade or more and it probably didn’t hurt that the woman he called Hope was charge of where they lived. He checked his watch as he settled down.
“How’s the kiddo taking being left behind?”
Jeff didn’t talk very much when they were away from Hope’s home but quiet private moments they had when away or alone seemed to loosen his tongue a bit. The changes on him were noticeable, his hair was fully gray, he had grown a short beard and kept it trim, but the biggest was he had found something worth fighting for and keeping close. He was more of someone that lived then someone who sought out the next fight or job. He had changed immensely over the last fifteen years and that was due to someone unexpected coming into his life when he least expected it. He looked at her and then at Maera. Fathom’s Sister was more of an enigma. She tolerated a lot of things and when it came to him he was at a loss. She was nice and even told him what armor would be good for what they were going to be doing at the time.
“Maera what’s the purpose of coming to this zone that was once New York and is not the place I expected to come. I doubt my house is still standing and if it what do you expect to find?”
Jeff never really did look back at once Hope took him away from land. He should have come back but he didn’t and now here he was in the surf off a zone that encompassed New York.
