She smiled at Kayne, of course she was perceptive. She wasn’t against the idea and obviously it was ultimately Kayne’s decision.
“So what are we looking for in town? I really want to build a forge. It would be a boon to the farm and being able to smelt metal would help with repairs. Father showed me a property survey he conducted. There is some iron and zinc in the hills.”
She shrugged at Kayne trying to gauge his response to the fact they could actually forge parts to support the farm. She didn’t know how he would respond to the info. It was a chance it was wrong as well.
“We also have some copper deposits. Dad said we should use them.”

Kayne smile. "We're not looking for anything in particular, I just thought we should do something to celebrate the mech being fixed. And your right, a forge would be beneficial. It would certainly make us more self sufficient." He had no idea how to use a forge or smelt metal, but he was confident he could learn quickly.
"He's right. If we have copper deposits we can access, we should use them. They're doing no one any good as they are. Having access to these metals, and the ability to work with them, can also bring us more income."

Rhona smiled and decided to tell him the books dad gave her for them. She toed the sack toward him and offered to take the reins.
“He gave me the books a day ago. I’ve read all three of them already. You can have them. I’ll handle the mining portion. I’ve already got the materials in mind for the mine. Lumber mainly. Heavy beams and regular lumber.”
She handed Kayne the list she had made of the lumber. It was all rather inexpensive. She smiled and let him look and take the books.
“I wonder if we can fashion a scoop type arm for the field mech?”

Kayne looked over the books and the list that she handed him. At her question he smiled. "We just might be able to. I'll see what I can find in town that will help with that."
It was a short time later that they approached the town. Kayne tied the horse up and hopped off of the cart. He gave the horse a pat and walked around to the other side to meet up with Rhona. He pulled his wallet out of his pants and pulled out a couple of cash notes, handing them to her. Meet up in a couple of hours for lunch?" he asked.

Rhona nodded and grinned. They were going to have a good time.
“Great!”
Rhona accepted the money and nodded to him. This was a time to see about her cloth order. Then maybe go see Jim aNd peruse his wares. She wanted the cloth for more clothes but Jim alway had something.
“Lunch….sounds great. See you then.”
She started off toward the shop she wanted to visit first to check on her cloth.

Kayne waved her off and went his own way. Rhona's idea about adding a scoop arm onto the mech had the gears in his head turning. Normally he'd have liked to sketch the idea out first, but he didn't have any paper or pencils with him. But he had an idea of what parts would be required, so he headed to what passed for the town's industrial center. If he was lucky, he'd be able to find some useful parts there.
And if he was *really* lucky, he thought, he might just run into Viola somewhere along the way.

Viola would be found at the location Kayne was headed. She was requisitioning supplies for her people. She wanted them outfitted for a longer scouting trek into the woodlands. She had brought her cartographers so she could properly map the lands she was ‘given’ for her suppression of the rebellion. Her father had been personally selected by Cornwallis to handle the rebellion and when he finished the traitors had been sent home to stand trial in their homeland. He had hated doing it but now that was now his daughters concern. He had retired and left his daughter in command. She had been overseeing the colonies every since. She turned as one of her people spoke to her and she nodded. It had been good timing as she spied Kayne coming toward the shop.
“Leftenant! We have another two days until we need to be on trail mapping. Our monarch is expecting maps of this land and we deliver. I’ll get our guide for this excursion if possible.”
Her leftenant answered and started to issue orders to get the people moving along.

Kayne's heart skipped a beat and hopped into his throat when he caught sight of Viola outside the very shop he was heading for, remembering what Rhona had told him on the way into town. He forced the organ back into its proper place, and smiled, lifting a hand in greeting. "Lady Viola, good morning." He gestured to the the retinue and gathered supplies behind her. "Planning another trek?"

Viola smiled to Kayne as he approached and called out to her. He was going to be her afternoon visit for his knowledge and maps of the area. That including his expertise as a guide past areas they hadn’t been yet and there was also his sister. She worried that women wouldn’t forgive her if she got Kayne hurt.
“Kayne you are just who I was going to be looking for later today. I’d like to say you saved me a trip but I do want to ask if you can accommodate a request.”
Kayne was more then what she wanted but she didn’t want him to feel she was using her authority to force him to have feelings for her. She waited a moment.
“Let’s go take tea and I’ll give you my request.”

Kayne grinned. "Going to put me to work again, are you?" He nodded his head in the direction of Viola's favorite bakery (which, he assumed, had less to do with bread and pastries and more to do with their tea room).
"I'm all ears." He enjoyed the adventure that came with being her guide, and though he knew he had plenty of work to be doing at the farm, the prospect of a new adventure excited him.
The company wasn't too bad, either. He didn't know the first thing about courting women, but he did know he liked the time he spent with Viola. He also liked that she trusted and relied on him.
He opened the door for her when they reached the shop.

“In a way. It’s also a request as well. Thank you.”
She walked in to the shop and slowly made her way to the tea room. The owner was nervous the first time Viola came into her shop. It was fine as the tea was good and decor and atmosphere suited her.
“Well a gentleman who knows how to please a woman. This is refreshing. Kayne what are you having today. I’m going to get my regular and whatever you’re after.”
The shop owner knew Kayne and his father. She though his sister was a bit strange. She had a son about her age and while not many young women here she seemed the best of them.

Kayne chuckled. "I don't know about 'gentleman.' Black tea, no sugar." Kayne said. He couldn't stand sweetened tea. He took a seat across from Viola. "So tell me. What is this request?"
His asking was more of a formality. He'd already made up his mind that he would help her. He could tell himself it was because the sense of adventure excited him, and while that was certainly true, it was moreso the ability to be with her.

The shop keeper nodded at Kayne’s and Viola’s request and went off to fetch the kettle and cups. That gave Viola the chance to ask.
“Yes you are….trust me.”
Viola wouldn’t recount how many supposed gentleman couldn’t accept her when she herself was chosen by their ailing Queen on the advice of Cornwallis for her to administer the colonies. The Queen and her daughters seemed to appreciate her.
“I have to ask if we can use one of your unused pastures or fields to set camp. We can’t possible do it in town as I several hundred men, wagons, an army of cartographers, and pack animals. “We would overwhelm the town. I would like if you could ask your father to meet with me and so I may deliver my request in person.”
She hated asking this of him. It would seem she was exploiting him due to the friendship they had built. She also wanted a guide as well.
“I also would like to retain your services as a guide as well.”
She smiled at him as their tea was delivered.
“Thank you madam I love your shop.”

Kayne considered Viola's request, hesitating before answering. He knew his father liked his privacy, and wasn't entirely sure how receptive the man would be to the idea. But they had plenty of land, far enough away from the house that he didn't foresee it being a problem.
"Yes, I will ask him. My father can be a bit...difficult, but I don't think he would have a problem with it. So long as your team is respectful of the land, and of my family's privacy."
He smiled and thanked the shopkeeper, who expressed her gratitude for their patronage before stepping away to attend the other patrons. He took a sip of his tea, which was still hot enough to burn a normal person's mouth.
"As for your second request," he said as he set the cup down, "you should already know the answer to that one."

Viola sipped her tea while she listened to Kayne. He knew his father best and the stipulations on their occupation of a tract of land was not out of the question.
“I wouldn’t presume to know your father. I do appreciate your speaking with him for me. I will of course ask him in person as well after you’ve told him. I don’t think it out of the question.”
Her smile wasn’t unwarranted at his response to her second request. He was invaluable as a guide. He could speak several of the native people’s languages. He also knew their customs and could easily be useful to avoid offending the native people.
“Thank you Kayne you honor me. I am going to have to request a rate increase for you. May even have to conscript your and give you the position of company adjutant with a field commission of master and pay. Don’t tempted me Master Kayne.”
She would in an instant do that for his services. She took another drink off her tea and savored how it tasted. It wasn’t the tea it was the atmosphere.
