Kayne wasn't used to praise like this. He smiled, almost sheepish. "With respect, I'm not sure I would be able to accept such a generous offer. I am happy to be able to assist you, without the title of Master."
He took another sip. "So what is the nature of your mission this time?"

Kayne never failed to surprise her but she knew the offer would be turned down. She expected it and if he inquired about it on his own she would offer it again. He was invaluable and seemed to have a knack for soldiering that not many picked up on a farm.
“I understand. The offer stands if you change your mind.”
Fluid conversation made things pleasant. She enjoyed talking Kayne as he always had good topics.
“It will entail more mapping and marching. It’s good to know that country side and also meet the native people of the land more to get a fee for them. General military stuff.”

Kayne nodded. He was happy to be a liaison between Viola's military unit and the native people. The natives trusted him, even as they were wary of the foreign military folks. Kayne knew they were nervous about people usurping their land, and he hoped to ease some of their fears during this expedition.
He grinned, "And here I thought you had mapped the entire area by now."

She smiled as she sipped her tea. She wish that they had mapped all these lands. The Queen wanted to know the layout of territory. It would make communication with the indigenous people easier.
“Not quite. We also aim to establish a more firm line of communication with the peoples of this land. It makes sense to get to know your neighbors much like you have done.”
She had went to get her tea and set it back down. She wanted to see how his labors on the farm were treating him.
“Tell me about what you’ve discovered around here. You live on the frontier and have more land than anyone else. What interesting things have you come across?”

"Father did a survery of the land and discovered some mineral deposits. Rhona mentioned wanting to build a forge so we could make use of them." He grinned. "I fixed the damned mech that was giving me problems last season. I'm going to see if I can turn it into a multi-purpose machine, so we can use it for the field and for mining."
He finished off his cup of tea. "Otherwise, it's been much the same as last we met. Father's always busy in his workshop, and there's never any shortage of work to be done at the farm."

Viola listened to Kayne about the activities he had been up to over the long winter. She had been to sea more than normal at the behest of their ailing monarch. She finally had the moment to visit the colonies and take stock of the land she had helped secure.
“Your sister is always working same as you. You two are what everyone should strive for. Your father should really apply to the Academy of Sciences in London and lend his mind to the empire. I feel that what he’s doing is for the benefit of all. It shows in his two children. One I respect highly.”
Kayne was a farmer and all purpose man. Viola respected that and had come to look forward to visits with Kayne. His talk of mining operations with a repaired mech had Viola intensely interested.
“That farming mech which others gave up on you have it working. That is good news. Where do you and your sister find time for all the work?”

Kayne chuckled. "As much as I agree with you, it would be nice to see him come out of the basement once in a while after all, good luck convincing him. He's much too...reclusive." Kayne made a face. "I don't think he likes people all that much."
Viola's comment about respect had a red flush creeping up from under the collar of his shirt. "I just do what I have to do to keep the farm running. Same as Rhona." He grinned. "We have a lot of sleepless nights." He was proud of his work on the mech, though. "You should come by the farm and check it out. I'm sure even a city girl like you could pilot it," he teased.

“The small snippets of conversation about him make me want to meet him. He’s by your accounts brilliant and he deserves the request delivered in person if he wishes. I ask you, because he seems to be content with you making the decisions.”
She had finished her tea and the woman who ran the tea room appeared and Viola nodded to her about another cup. The woman moved to get the tea pot. Was he was taunting her? That was refreshing and rather bold of him.
“Kayne I was not a calm child on my parents estate. I was yes privileged in my youth but I was not tamed. That’s why I entered military service. I am looking forward to visiting your farm“

Kayne grinned. "Perfect. Are you free for dinner? I've got meat that's been smoking about a month that will make a good roast and a barrel of locally distilled whiskey that's itching to be tapped."
Although the offer appeared casual on the surface, he very much hoped she would say yes.

Viola knew Kayne was hold but this was truly surprising and an offer for a home cooked meal no less. She couldn’t refuse and wouldn’t refuse. She stood caught the attention of the hostess who came over quickly. She whispered to her and she was off.
“I accept. What time would you like me to arrive? I’m having our done hostess summon my Adjutant to clear off my evening schedule. This way I can attend.”
She sipped the last bit of her cool tea and smiled at Kayne. This was a very pleasant surprise after all. Kayne himself was an exemplary person and his father was for all she could gather through reports a genius. His sister was what the locals and native people called salt of the earth and hard worker. She wanted to visit the farm to get mainly Rhona’s unspoken approval to see her brother more often than business.

Kayne grinned. "How does 6 sound?" That would give him plenty of time to finish in town and get back home. He hoped Rhona wouldn't mind the added company. He was only slightly more concerned about how their reclusive father would react. It was very rare that outsiders came to the farm. But he found himself not just wanting to impress Viola, but to spend more time with her, getting to know her.
Letting her get to know more about him. And what better way to do that than to provide to her the opportunity to see him in his natural environment.

She mentally ran through her schedule and could see any conflicts she could push off. This was important for her people to have a winter over spot where they could not only gave their supplies stored at if they built the storage with the owners permission.
“That will workout nicely. Thank you for the invitation.”
Her next cup of tea was poured and she looked at Kayne for a moment then spoke up.
“Kayne would you like another cup? It would give me time to pick your brain to better ease any fears your father may have.”
She chuckled slightly as another cup would allow her that opportunity but may delay plans Kayne had to complete in town. She had just realized that after all his house was a good trip of an hour and forty-five minutes to two hours. She had time after this to check on labors began and then ride out to the farm.

Kayne smiled. "No more for me, but I'll gladly stay while you finish yours." It was early, he still had time to finish up his errands and round up Rhona before the trek back to the farm.
"As far as what fears my father may have...he's just such a private person. Of course, because of your generosity I have no doubt he will receive you without issue." Kayne winced, "He's a bit...eccentric, so you'll have to excuse him at times."

Viola felt this was a tough situation with his father and she understood that feeling as it had shocked her father when she wanted to be a soldier.
“I’ll be good Kayne. I don’t want to cause any issues with your dad.”
She sipped her tea for a moment and didn’t realize she was also a bit nervous about meeting Kayne’s father. That was preposterous she was just taking care of her people and gaining the land-owners permission in person was the proper thing to do in this situation.
“Don’t worry about a thing. I’ll do best at easing his fears about us wintering on the property. I have a question off topic.”
She had heard, from rumor mostly, that his sister Rhona fluently spoke the locals language.
“I’ve heard some rumors that your sister speaks the local peoples dialect? Any truth to that?”

Kayne nodded. "Actually, yes. Rhona has spent quite a bit of time getting to know the language of the local natives. It's grown their trust with us, I think. At the very least, it's made them more consistent trading partners."
