Kayne downed the rest of his drink, nearly choking on it as the girl sniffed him. The girl was unsettling him more and more. He wasn't sure if "Reza 'de Lenore" was a name or something in a language he did not recognize.
Sweet on him? "Unlikely," he said to Viola, handing her his glass for a refill. "But I second her desire for food. My stomach hasn't stopped rumbling since you mentioned venison."

Viola gladly refilled Kayne’s drink as the girl seemed to have become interested in the idea of different clothing and started to motion for Viola to show her.
“Cloring pease??? Foood please.”
Viola looked at Kayne. Alright Lenore was asking for food and clothing. Well she hoped it was clothing and not anything else. She motioned Kayne to follow.
“Let’s see if I have any pants from when I was here age. Hell even a shirt and sweat pants will work. My room up the stairs and then out to the meeting house in the village.”
She led them up the servant stairs and to her room and then looked at Lenore.
“Lenore come here young lady let’s find you some clothing. My parents always saved some of my stuff. Let me see what we have here. Try the pants and sweats. Then this shirt and hell these socks as you look about my shoe size. Alright let’s eat.”
Lenore passed a mirror and stopped and marveled at the clothing.
“This….nice. Kayne….like?”

Kayne stood apart from the two females, hanging near Viola's bedroom door. While modesty wasn't an issue for him and still wasn't exactly something he understood, he had learned over the past decade that women enjoyed privacy while dressing.
He moved further into the room when Lenore asked for his opinion on the clothing. Another thing he didn't understand. Why did this strange girl care what he thought? Why did women in general care about others' opinions about their clothing? Fashion was another check on the list of things Kayne still didn't quite get. Clothes were meant to serve a functional purpose.
Still, he nodded. "They fit you well. And you'll at least appear to fit in."

Viola nearly broke into laughter at how Kayne complimented Lenore. She had been on the receiving end of some strange compliments but that by far was the best one.
“Lenore darling let’s not get Kayne flustered or me for that matter. We’ve had a bit of a trying day. Let’s go get food.”
Lenore looked at Viola and then Kayne.
“Food pease.”
Viola nodded and lead the way out of the manor house and down a stone path into the trees to the small village that was hidden in the woods.
“Alright we are here.”
Viola pointed for Kayne’s benefit.
“Meeting or Public House. Let’s go have a meal.”

Kayne looked at Viola and perked a brow. Flustered? He wasn't flustered. He nodded to Lenore and gestured for her to follow Viola, and then he followed behind, bringing up the rear.
He looked around as they came upon the village. It was the perfect place to hide away from the world, right under the rest of the city's nose, yet secluded. He looked at the building Viola pointed at and nodded. "Sounds good. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Lenore is hungry."

Viola gave a laugh at the dry wit Kayne exercised. He wasn’t to far off what she actually desired in a partner. This though wasn’t the time or place. He handled himself well in a fight and he was capable.
“I’ll go with your judgment. Let’s get inside…and Lenore let’s not gawk and run ahead. Stay with your party sweetie.”
She opened the door and light that spilled out brought a warmth of life with it as soft music echoed from within the light. The murmur of voices could be heard and Viola lead the way in.
“Lady Viola! You’ve brought company!”
Viola chuckled nervously and lead Lenore to an empty table and hoped Kayne didn’t get lost in the small crowd. She sat and took a calming breath.
“Kayne would you like an ale, it’s brewed locally and quite good.”
She smiled as the music picked up a bit.

It was hard to get lost when you towered over nearly everyone present. He wasn't sure why Viola was nervous, but he followed her to the table and took a seat across from her.
He nodded at her offer of ale. He wouldnt turn down a good drink. "Yes, thank you."
As they waited, he listened to the idle conversation around him. It was an old habit he couldn't turn off, a survival instinct from his time under Project Silent Defense. Not that there was any danger here, or any conversation of interest.
He tapped a finger on the table to the beat of the music.

Viola looked around quickly and saw the young woman who served while her mother cooked, while her father tender bar and actually made the beer. She caught her attention and she came over.
“Lady Avery what are you having tonight?”
That was welcoming and Viola relaxed feeling her tension drain away at the welcome.
“Whatever your mum has cooked up. Two ales and tea for the young woman.”
She nodded and took off to clear another table and drop dishes and then returned with two ales.
“Kettles on for tea. I’ll be back with your plates.”
Viola looked at Kayne as she went off to get their food and disappeared into the back.
“Kayne where we’re you trained? Those skills are ingrained and reaction times speak of usage. Just curious not an interrogation.”

Kayne observed how Viola relaxed when the server approached them. He still thought it odd. Why should she be nervous around her own staff? When the young woman returned with their ales he sat back and took a sip. Viola's question was not entirely unexpected, and he gave her the same answers as anybody who had asked after going AWOL.
"I did spec ops for the US Military for several years," he answered easily. It wasn't a complete lie, and was enough of an answer for most people. And now it was his turn to ask a question.
"Why did coming here make you nervous?"

She nodded and figured as much but he was a bit in tune with the environment and his reactions were just supernatural. She was glad he came along.
“Putting skills to use for survival. I can appreciate that. I’m very appreciative that you came along when you did as well.”
After she said that plates were dropped and the waitress left for the tea. The teen started eating with her hands.
“Lenore! Dear…use the fork.”
She handed her the utensil and she carefully maneuvered it to get. After another bite she was getting the hang of it. While Viola quickly monitored she answered Kayne.
“My mother always told me that being an Avery was a title you earned. I have these people because of that. So yes this type of leadership makes me nervous. It governing not war fighting.”

When Viola handed Lenore the fork and she looked it over like it was a foreign object, he nudged her with his elbow and modeled how to use it. Once she was comfortably eating he turned his attention back to Viola.
"It looks to me like you have nothing to worry about. The people here seem to respect you, from what I've seen so far. So whatever you're doing, you seem to be doing it well."

Viola sighed. This stranger had picked up on her anxiety and he was not so strange after all. Trying to survive in a hellish world where robots and augmented humans ran around. She wouldn’t mind it so much but it made getting a decent drink next to impossible.
“Thank you Kayne it is nice to hear it. It does take the edge off of things.”
She glanced at her plate.
“Venison! They slow roast it after brining it for three days. It gets rubbed with some salt and pepper then….just taste it and tell me!”
She cut herself a bite and chewed slowly savoring it. She caught waitress.
“Whiskey….the stuff the American makes. That has a very interesting taste. Let’s see what our guest thinks. Kayne…whiskey?”

The smell of the food had his stomach growling. It had been a long time since he'd had something other than microwave meals or something out of a box.
He cut himself a piece of the meat on his plate and had to resist the urge to groan as the tender meat practically melted in his mouth. "Holy shit," he said and bit down on another piece.
He looked across the table at Viola and then the waitress and nodded. He looked back down at his plate and wondered if one serving was going to be enough.

Viola watched Kayne interact with Lenore and smiled. That was nice of him. She glanced around the room and then back to Kayne. He was a hungry guy. Lenore slid her empty plate over as well. The young woman returned and Viola perked up. The whiskey was here.
“Could we get a bit more for these two?”
The woman laughed and nodded.
“I’m sorry I know I’ve been running you.”
The young woman laughed.
“It’s fine Lady Viola.”
Once the girl was off and she considered her whiskey.
“I’ve got you Kayne. What do you think of this place?”

Kayne took a sip of the whiskey before answering. "Best meal I've had in weeks," he said. He wasn't sure how he felt that Viola could so easily read his thoughts regarding the meal portions, but he wasn't going to complain. The food was great. "Seriously, the people who live here are lucky to have access to something this close to home cooking." Not that he knew exactly what "home cooking" was like, but over the past decade he'd gotten a fairly clear idea of what it was supposed to be, and knew that most restaurants were not like that.
