“Kayne you looked hungry and since the portions here are larger than normal and coupled with the way you two devoured your meals seconds seem a good choice.”
The serving woman delivered fresh plates and took away their plates while setting another stout in front of Viola. She smiled and nodded her thanks. The other thing Kayne would have noticed is most people here were armed and that was a big point that people would have taken issue with.
“They are good people and deserve protection from the forces that would assail them. That’s why I have village now.”

"Forces that would assail them?" Kayne asked. He had learned long ago that appearances couldn't be trusted, but the people that surrounded them seemed...normal. Aside from whatever those creatures were in the city, and it wasn't like they were a problem before now, who would be coming after them? It was then, though, that he noticed that many of the villagers present were armed. "Isn't it illegal for civilians to own firearms here?"

“Yes Kayne, similar to those things we fought in town. Plus all manner of strange things, creatures, and high strangeness. It’s the United Kingdom, pagans wandered these lands, Romans, and that’s just England. That doesn’t even begin to take into account Scottish and Irish legends and lore.”
She laughed at the question in a friendly way that should put most people at ease. It was also a fair question.
“Yes it is, since those are registered to me and I’m allowed to own as part of my title and well going way back to vassals and men at arms it’s ok.”

Kayne perked a brow. "Those things exist?" He had never put much stock in myths and legends, although he was willing to suspend his disbelief in light of what he had witnessed earlier in the day. And he was, after all, sitting next to what one might consider a "strange thing."
Her explanation for the guns made sense. And it seemed like they weren't bothered out here by outsiders. He wondered how many people even knew this settlement existed. His guess? Not many. It was well hidden, and they appeared to have all they needed in their small community, and no desire to interact with outsiders.
He couldn't think of anywhere better to stay off of R1K's radar.
He leaned back after polishing off the remains of his plate with a satisfied groan. "I'm going to have to hit the gym after that."

Lenore burped and started to eyeball the other plates around the room. Viola saw she had finished and caught the serving persons attention.
“Lenore you want some more?”
Lenore nodded vigorously at being asked if she wanted more. The serving person came over and took the order for more and left.
“You know I would have been with you until we had deer coming up mangled. So I get your reluctant acceptance of it. I do.”
Well he didn’t seem to need the gym.
“You sure? I mean you don’t seem to nice like you skipped any gym days.”

Kayne admired the young girl's appetite. His body's fast metabolism meant he needed to eat more than a normal person, but she was putting him to shame in that department. It was amusing. He turned his attention back to Viola when she mentioned mangled deer. Sounded like wolves to him, but he wasn't going to insult his gracious host by being combative.
Ah, how time had changed things.
The corners of his mouth lifted in a ghost of a smile at her compliment. "Precisely why I'm going to need to hit the gym after such a heavy meal. I can't be losing my physique."

Viola chuckled and shook her head. Kayne was an enigma. He seemed in excellent shape. He was skilled and moved as such. The one missing thing was who had trained him. He was friendly and assisted without thought. He blended in well and settled in easy here for this moment. He was good people to have around. She would offer him a room tonight to see what he thought. As she made her assessment of him the server brought Lenore’s plate and two fresh pints and whiskeys.
“Lady Viola….mum would like a word if you have time?”
Viola nodded at her.
“Of course Jess, when Lenore finished eating.”
The young woman skipped off and Viola looked directly at Kayne.
“Kayne, I think you’re trying to dupe me. Although if you need a gym the house has one. I’ll show you around if you want to stay a few days.”
Lenore meanwhile had started on her second helping with an alacrity.

Kayne leaned forward just slightly. "Lady Viola," he started, an air of teasing in his tone, "what would I possibly have to gain by trying to dupe you?"
He straightened back in his seat and nodded. "I could use a change of scenery for a couple of days. Getting away from the city for a while might be a good idea."
He looked at Lenore and then back at Viola. "If you need to excuse yourself to speak with the cook, I'll be fine watching her."
