The battle had taken its toll on Jeff and the people who had been subjected to Darius’ twisted ways and methods. He felt for the people who had encountered him prior and knew that the fallout would in time pass. As far as he could tell Skye had died and the facility had been destroyed. Rhona had disappeared during the flight from the facility that had been her home. He had thought he’d go back to confirm the destruction but it had to be destroyed. He missed those kids but having helped bury a person he considered his daughter he decided to offer his son a trip out of the country to place he had acquired in Japan. You could easily catch the train into Tokyo and it was only a hour trip or two hour round trip. Gotemba was in the mountains and the place he had was considered country enough with the actual trip into Gotemba being a twenty-five minute drive.
He had called ahead and arranged for the house readied for his arrival. It was a large house by Japanese standards because it had five rooms. The modernization he paid for over the last ten years was nice. The remodeling and keeping the ascetic classic was a small fortune. He didn’t care though as this was the perfect place for Matthew and the young woman he had feelings for to recover from their ordeal. Gabrielle was interesting and after some digging into her past had a living brother. He didn’t want to bother him yet and would at a future date contact the man and invite him to come see his sister. This wasn’t that time. Gabrielle was resilient but he wasn’t going to overload her. The passports for Hope, Maera, Matthew and Gabrielle were very real. The question of guardianship came up for Gabrielle and he had some very good forged documents proclaiming he was her guardian. While he knew that her brother could contest that he could also put a bullet on him if he ruined her recovery.
Jeff was sitting outside watching the sun rise. He had never knew peace in his life and he was feeling this was as close to it he would get for a while. He looked like one of those older Americans who had a young wife and children from a previous marriage. The residents of the area had found Jeff was a natural mechanic and assisted them with repairs on their vehicles and other stuff they needed fixed. He was settling into what some would call a normal life. Gabrielle seemed to be getting on well as he had tutors come to educate her. Heck he had them for both her and Matthew. Matthew still gave him dark looks but seemed somewhat appreciative of this. He also ensured everyone had a monthly stipend to do as they wanted in town or in Tokyo.
He had to wonder….was he at peace. He lost a woman he considered a daughter. His son was here but minus his sister. The circumstances weren’t the best with how they came to be here but he wanted them to make the best of it. Maera and Hope seemed to be enjoying themselves as well. The took active parts in educating themselves and seemed to absorb knowledge at a rate that impressed him. He took another sip on his bancha and watched as the sun started to illuminate the snow covered peak of Mount Fuji. The cast iron kettle sat on the warmer and there were four other tea cups made of the same cast iron. He knew soon the sounds of life would be coming from within as it would be punctuated by alarms. This meant the day would be starting. He rose and stretched and then sat back down. He sighed. It was quiet and sometimes he abhorred quiet. It wasn’t like that today. He liked this quiet.
(Bancha is typically considered a lower grade tea compared to sencha. However, an upside to this is it is cheaper than other Japanese green teas. This is why the Japanese consider bancha as tea for everyday drinking.)
