The interview process had been several weeks long and full of the regular questions and also some very in-depth questions. He answered and had two I person interviews before he was hired. He had found that this school was dedicated to teaching young minds, giving them an education and also teaching them to use their gifts. He didn’t believe that anyone should have to worry or fear because they had gifts that they should hide themselves. This also extended to his kids. He knew his ex-wife was taking them to all these doctors because they were gifted. He wanted custody and was actually winning the custody battle. The headmaster, Charles Xavier, was reportedly a telepath. He had done his final interview with him. He seemed devoted to the schools mission and he found it aligned with his values as well. He had moved in as he was told teacher reside on school grounds and he was afforded a room. He had been hired to teach the new class of students tactics and how to work as a small squad. He had experience and would teach them that. Today was his first day and been given a classroom after a tour of the facility. He was currently in his classroom awaiting the arrival of his student.
On the board he had written in standard block lettering ‘INSTRUCTOR CALDWELL’ and had a class roster of who should be attending. He sat behind his desk waiting. He wondered if he could get his kids and have them attend the school. He was reading ‘The Things They Carried’ and there was a stack of them on the corner of his desk. He was going to have to teach minds between the ages of 17-25 the art or being a unit. It wasn’t all drills and torturing them with outlandish training. It was sometimes what they read and learned that lent to them becoming a team. He knew these lessons well.

("This should be...educational...") He thought to himself as he neared the classroom early...him behing a 'new' student and there apparently was a new Instructor. How quickly would they 'go to war'?
...He still lived in the van, there wasn't a reason not to as there was a decent enough bathroom near the garage...
He entered the classroom, saw the name written on the board and gave a "Hello." to the Instructor.

A dark haired girl entered quietly in to the classroom. She was given a tour and her rooster by the red haired teacher. She slid quietly into a sit in the back corner of the classroom. She didn't want to draw any more attention to herself. She took in a deep breath as she pulled out of a notebook and pen. Her eyes glanced to the board as she saw the name written.
She crossed her legs as she made herself small and unnoticeable as she watched the others enter into the classroom. Her lips turned upwards as she saw the man who helped rescue her from captivity. It was nice to see that she knew at least one person here. She took in a deep breath as her eyes went to the front. She wasn't sure what to expect.

After a while of trying to regain and restore her memories it was recommended to her that she go attend the new instructors class. She was shown to the room and would do her best to remember the way there.
She walked into the classroom and saw the instructor sitting behind his desk, “Instructor Caldwell, I’ve been working with ms. Jean to regain my memory so I apologize ahead of time if I forgot your name or something. I’ve been told my name is Charis, nice to meet you.”

Vance was still sour about what happened at the mansion, but he made himself put on something of a professional face as he walked into the classroom. His eyes glanced to the still-amnesic Charis, trying to offer a hello to her as he sat down in the new instructor's classroom. "Good morning, Instructor Caldwell," he said, trying to be polite while holding back his emotion and stress. I'm Vance."

He smiled as the rest came in and took a seat. He checked his watch and they weren't late as this was the first day. He didn't do late or on time. He just wanted them to get their seats so they could begin.
"So we have Charis and Vance, that must make the other two Ryuusei and Corrina. Good morning class."
He cleared his throat and took a sip off his coffee before he launch into it.
"I'm as the board says, Instructor Caldwell. I get to teach the basics of squad tactics and how to function as a small team. Team cohesion is the difference between you finding your way home alive or in a bodybag. I know you are gifted and have powers and think that those powers are your edge. I can honestly say they are and they aren't your edge. Overwhelming force can kill anything."
He picked up the stack of books he had on the corner and desk and gave one to each student. He remembered reading this book himself. It was a good book to give them the mindset that not all soldiers were brutal killing machines. They didn't have fall to baser natures to defend themselves and their friends.
"The Things We Carried is a collection of short stories. The two stories I want you to read are 'Speaking of Courage' and 'Notes' after you have read I want to tell me what the impact of war was on this person."
He returned back to the board and wrote the stories on it. Then he turned around looked at them.
"Now today's lesson is going to be on how small squad tactics can actually defeat a larger force. Major Lloyd W. Williams of the 51st Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines was ordered by the French colonel at the defensive line just north of the village of Lucy-le-Bocage, Belleau Wood. His response was Retreat, hell! We just got here. It was his belief in his people that they could not only hold the defensive line but beat the Germans."
This was a part of the lesson he always hated teaching but he would because it would show that even though you are in charge you still can die.
"He was wound by German sharpnel and they had been gassed. When they finally got the medics to him and had die from not his wounds but artillery. The point of this battle is that the French forces were in return, the Germans had five division against two Allied Divisions, an Army Division and Marine Brigade. It was a month of fighting but the two combine division stopped five. The reason is because of small squad tactics and grit."
He stopped his short lecture.
"Questions?"

He took the book and looked it over; the cover depicted several helicopters flying above a few soldiers on the ground. From what he gathered from the description on the back cover, it was about a single unit but each story recounted the experiences of the individual members. ...Might actually be an interesting read in general. When it came time for the lecture, he couldn't help but be reminded of his old gang...there were only three of them, but because they could move swiftly and knew the area... ...And of course, being underestimated for their size... They managed to take down the bigger gangs who ruled the city and became the top dogs in Darilshade.
...it also was a reminder of how much he missed them...

Corrina took in a deep breath as she grabbed the book. She flipped through the pages as she wasn't sure how her power would help in battle. Battle tactics were never her thing though she could learn how do so in the middle of a fight.
She took a few notes on the page as things sorta made sense. She remembered some of the WW2 battles from school. She had a feeling that this would be on a smaller scale. It would be interesting to see how everything applied to the lessons to learn.
She glanced at Ryuusei to see his reaction. His attention was all on the lesson. She sighed as she looked at the other students. She wasn't sure how well she would do in this type of class.

Charis had sat down and opened the book given to her and looked at some of the pages but put it down as Professor Caldwell started speaking to them. She did her best to listen and hoped that she would remember the teachings. As he asked if anyone had questions she thought for a moment then raised her hand.
When and if she was called on she would ask, " What happened to the rest of them that were fighting, like what other things did they try? I don't know if that makes sense or did i just make a fool out of myself for asking?"

Vance took the book that Prof. Caldwell gave them, giving a look through it, then listened to the lecture he gave about the French colonel that was injured by shrapnel and gas but died to artillery. It brought up a question to mind.
"Professor," he announced. "What was the Colonel's plan for going against the Generals if he had actually made it all the way into battle?"

Instructor Caldwell liked the questions and the young woman named Charis. Her question about what happened to the other men was a good one. He had looked over the records and found that out of the divisions that stayed to hold the defensive line that only one-thousand eight-hundred and eleven died.
“Charis, that’s a good question. 1,811 died during the month long fighting while there 9,777 casualties. You have to know that the German forces used gas attacks. The choices were stop them or allow for the German forces to keep their offensive alive and then all of France. War is not something we take up lightly. It horrible and good people are lost. Sometimes the only thing to do or try is forceful remind an enemy who is intent on no less than the utter annihilation of those who oppose them.”
He smiled at Charis and the good question she asked. It showed a depth in thought and their thought process. What else can we do beside kill an enemy.
Vance’s question was an excellent one as well. He figured it was just a fighting soldiers arrogance. Although it showed that the Allied forces weren’t willing to give up in the face of such odds.
“The Colnonel’s plan was retreat in the face of the German offensive. The American Allied forces plan was most likely just good old fashioned arrogance. The whole saying of United States Marine Corps, 2nd Battalion 5th Marines is ‘Retreat, Hell!’ It was termed by the unit’s Captain Williams when they arrived. As for making it into battle they did make it but their commanding officer didn’t survive because again his own arrogance and disregard for his own wounds had him order medics to attend his men. So his plan was to hold the line and keep the Germans from advancing. This was during their spring offensive. It did raise morale for the war overall.”
He liked this as they were more interactive than regular high school students. They were more intent it seems.
“Keep in mind that during these battles in the early nineteenth century it was what some would call the prelude to advanced warfare.”
He now needed to fill the next thirty minutes as this took twenty and class was only fifty minutes long.
“What lessons could we learn from this early warfare?”

He rose an eyebrow at the mention of 'gas', though kept silent for much of the rest of the lecture. When the Instructor asked what lessons they could take away from that...coupled with that being the precursor to 'modern warfare'...he couldn't help but crack. "Now instead of gassing civies...we just drone strike'em!" Less human involvement and actual gore...WAY more civilized!

Corrina sat in the corner as she listened to the others with the lesson. She drew a picture on the corner of her notebook. A shudder ran down her spine as there was something about war which made her sick to her stomach. It was the brutality and massive loss of life. She had seen and witnessed things while living on the streets that made her want to hide away.
She shifted in her seat as she stayed quiet. This topic made her rather uncomfortable. She glanced at the others in the room as she let them answer the question.

Charis was happy that she asked a good question and sat there listening as the instructor added a lot of information that she was now trying to process. She wanted to wait this time to see what the others said and then she would possibly add to their inquiry's.
She did look outside every now and then sometimes wanting to be outside rather then in a class but she was told that this class would be helpful to all of them so she would do her best to stay.

Vance listened as Prof. Caldwell spoke of the Colonel's plan to hold the line against the Germans, speaking up once he asked the question. "Well, probably not to underestimate your enemies, and to actually be smart about how you fight," he began. "Strength and Toughness are not absolute factors to winning a fight, let alone a war, and sometimes you just need to be smarter."
