Rhona was on the edge of sleep and her mind wandered through the events of the day. She rested next to Todd who she pulled closer. They had seventy of her people. Her mother was there and some of the other medical staff who had come along with them. Over all the first few weeks had been harried but focused. They had cleaned out the five Silent Defense facilities and done several loop back visits to make sure the only things left behind were concrete walls, empty bays, and the dust. They had been utterly stripped. The reactors had been taken and were now powering their new home. The amount of technology that had been gleaned and all the projects was staggering. It led them to this place. It was their home. The medical staff that had come with them treated the other subjects of the program like their children and were committed to them having a life where they were used. The technical staff had come along because they had also liked the found family. It all had come together and they had spent the first six weeks getting their new home operational and then the next three turning it into a home.
Katherine and several of the other technicians and doctors they had elected as their council of administrators. They functioned as the what some would call a council of parents to help normalize and make a transition into a life that didn’t revolve around constant missions a reality. They were good at it as well. They found that taking them through regular education and life courses made the seventy Silent Defense subjects took to the new training like a fish to water and it wasn’t until T1L asked when his birthday was that they knew the new lessons were working. The next months had them throwing birthday parties for those who had birthdays during that time. Everyone attended and the atmosphere was jovial and calm. It wasn’t all regular lessons to be sure. The old training continued as all the subjects, Rhona included couldn’t break old habits. They had this ingrained in them and would always seek this type of training. They had even recovered G7A after she had been struck by lightning. They found her living on a beach with a bunch of surfers.
It wasn’t all birthday parties and high school classes. Some of it was just good old fashioned down time. They all took days off and had game nights to reinforce not everything had to be geared toward combat or training. The best night was when Todd was teaching them to play Monopoly. That was a great time and became a favorite game of the Project Silent defense augments. They just loved how you let the dice decide where you went and how you could buy property and charge rent. The second game that they learned to play was Uno. These games were things they never had in their lives until now. They also pirated TV channels so they had other forms of entertainment. Katherine and the council said it would be good for them to watch shows like Sesame Street and other shows that taught them about life situations other nonviolent conflict resolution. It was them as parents teaching kids. It was a great beginning to a new life.
She lay there between sleep and consciousness letting her mind wander over all events of the last few months of life. She had also learned that gardening and yoga were nice as well. She finally let herself drift off to sleep and snuggled into Todd before fully falling to sleep.
