The Bay

The gym was average; it had your basics - a treadmill, weights, and the like. A teleprompter hung in the middle and would queue in news segments frequently. Mostly it was used for music videos for workouts...
A pair of sweaty palms gripped the steel bar as a muscular man pulled himself up. His hazel eyes stared forward to the teleprompter as the news transmission went static. Sweat dripped from his brow, as the rest of his body was drenched. "49..." he growled as he pulled himself up again "50..." he yelled as she dropped from the bar. Walking over and grabbing a towel, he wiped off his face and grabbed his phone. No new notifications, nice. No, it wasn't Facebook. Facebook was dead. Anything remotely helpful, was dead. Digging into his back pocket, he found his pager. No messages, thank the god.
He had two modes of communication: One for his sister and the team, and one for her. The redheaded demon that he was forced to give his entire self to. In order to save lives, he had to made sacrifices. Said sacrifices were detrimental to him. He hadn't had a decent night's sleep in years. He sold his soul to the devil and betrayed his family, but he also saved the lives of thousands of mutants, his sister and his niece.
Looking to the clock, he grabbed his change of clothes and quickly changed into a black tank, jeans and combat boots. Walking out of the gym, he headed for the Bay. The Bay was there central intelligence was housed. The main computer, controls, cameras, the entire works.
As he approached, he observed a netted chair taken by a tall, raven haired woman. She was known as Fury...
Plopping himself down next to her, he smirked "So, what's the agenda today? Am I patrolling for survivors, sending a nuke to R1K?" he chuckled as he grabbed a water bottle from the mini fridge.
The woman looked to him, emotionless and void of feeling. "It worked. Cable is gone. The portal worked." she spoke softly as she closed her eyes.
Matthew sat in silence, staring into space "It worked?!"
She nodded "It worked.." now showing emotion "It fucking worked, Matt..."
As the next transmission came through, Skye put down the sandwich she was eating, almost spitting out the crumbs. The news was finished for the night. She quizzically looked forward and motioned the Matt to lean in.
“Just what in the hell is she gettin’ at?” Matt demanded in a whisper.
And then the House and the Senate were executed. Skye’s hands shook as she stopped breathing. Matthew’s eyes widened with shock and fury. “Son of a bitch, she’s taking over of the government. She’s taken all control...”
“Things just took a turn for the worse. We need to get Olivia out. I have no doubts in my mind that Rhona has a course set for Montana.” Skye replied, still looking at the now static monitor. “Ring in England at 0800, UK time.” She spoke quickly as she jumped from her chair.
Logan had just walked in and was more than pissed already. He hadn't wanted to do anything more than drink a few cold ones and sit in a chair. Then as the news played he found that wasn't going to be an option. That crazy bitch had went and killed the government. Skye was right. They needed to move their kids out of the United States.
"She is getting at ensuring that no sane mind can fucking stop her. That just seals it. Fury you're right. We need to move the kids. That is your kid and all the kids that have abilities. I'll make some calls. I know some people who can help us move them that aren't scared of the bitch."
He moved to stand and tossed Matt a beer.
"Come on kid time to roust a few people. They know you since you associated with that guy Jeff. Where the hell is he anyways? We could always someone hardcore to the cause and a good gun."
He grumbled a bit more and waited for Matt to follow. They couldn't call from here anyways as it would draw down a wave of Sentinels they wouldn't survive on their base.
Angie wiped her hands on a towel in the med bay as her thoughts were far off. There were quite a few people recovering from recent attacks of the Sentinels. It was hard to pin point how they escaped but they did. The numbers of mutants were slowing dwindling as many had been killed or taken away. There was the monster which had taken what freedoms they had and snuffed it. All because someone had the bright idea of killing the president. There was no sense in reliving something that could not be changed. Like sharks, once there is blood in the water, an attack would follow as humans usually did.
She sighed as she check the monitors as Ororo had fallen into a coma. She frowned deeply as she could not say if the woman would ever wake up. The equipment was limited as she worked with what she had. It was enough to keep others alive, just not enough to fully diagnose what was wrong. During this uncertain time, she was in the midst of developing nanobiology to help ease some of the wounded. It still needed to be refined before she could use it on humans.
She sighed as her round had ended. She figured to let others figure out how to fix the mess they there were in. She would keep their numbers from growing ever smaller. She sat on her stool as she went over the schematics for her tech once again. She tapped a pen on the side of her tablet as her face wrinkled up, trying to figure out what she was missing.
Matt caught the beer, twisting the cap off and tossing it into the garbage "As long as we keep our minds straight, we'll be fine. We just need to get the kids outa here." he remarked quickly "And Jeff is off swimming with the mermaid. He probably doesn't even know what's going on, or he'd be here. He'd never be absent in a presence of war; in fact, he'd be on the front lines." He said as he drank from his beer.
Skye stood, running both hands into her raven hair as she looked up to the ceiling "We need a way to get them to England without setting off any time of alarms. The moment they see a bird in the sky, they'll come right for us." and then it dawned on her "Cate. We need Cate. She's ported over water before, right? How many people can she take at once time?" she asked quickly before grabbing her phone. With Nightcrawler dead, she was the only person she knew that could port. "I need someone to round up the kids, get them to be packed and already by dawn."
Matthew nodded as he walked with Wolverine. As they walked, he peered into the medbay, seeing Angie. The girl was always hard at work, and it made him smile. She never quit "Hey Ang...wanna take a break? Roust?" he winked playfully.
Olivia entered the Bay Area, removing her headphones that were blasting Pantera. “Logan! Uncle Matt!” She smiled greatly, walking faster to catch up with the two “Are you heading out to kill the bad guys?”
Matt laughed “We’re out to help the good guys, and no, you can’t come. You need to stay here and focus, okay?” He told her firmly, but with love.
Olivia frowned “But, that’s all I ever do. I want action, and you can’t deny that there’s plenty out there. And I overheard from the others that they’re getting closer, and we’lol have to move? What’s going on?” She demanded as her arms folded together. “And I heard Mom talking to the blank space again. She was on the roof...don’t tell her that I was eavesdropping...but, she was talking about my dad. I think she might be going crazy. So, all the more reason for me to help.”
Angie was glancing into the microscope as she looked on to see how the tiny machines worked on stitching together tissue cells. Some of them went in the opposite direction while others started to burn the skin. Others actually did what they were suppose to. She pulled back as a frown deepen at the corner of her mouth. She pulled the glasses down from the top of her head.
She started to go through the coding again. What she really needed was an expert with this. Too bad the enemy destroyed half this country and had many living in fear. The question was, how long until the fear gave way to angry and hate? It was something that she hated to think about however it was the truth. The pendulum eventually swings the other way.
She heard her name as she looked up. The corners of her mouth turned upwards as she heard the voice. Two teams that were against each other, turned friends. It was all hands on deck if they wanted to reclaim this world. A break would not be the worst thing in the world. She grabbed the tablet as she folded it up while getting off her stool. All signals went straight here, just in case.
She was about to state something when Olivia came bounding in. She felt for the girl as most of the children were kept locked away. Maybe she could play a little piano later.
"But what would happen if you were to get injured out there? Who would take up arms when your mom dies or Uncle Matt?" She placed a hand on Olivia's shoulder. "I do not want to give that type of bad news to your mother. And your mother is fine, she is processing what has happened in her own way. You will get your chance soon enough. I am sure that we can think of a way to use your skills around here."
She was trying to be diplomatic. It was hard to say when one was a teenager. She tried to use a bit of logic with everything. It honestly was the truth. She hated to think of a world in which no one would be able to fight back.
"And I think a break might help clear my head." She smiled over at Matt and Logan.
Logan was surprised when Olivia ran up to them after Matt had called Angie out of her lab. He decided to address the main issue which was Angie and her work she was doing. It would be great to have them and he had heard from several sources that they were working on things that would make medical science better. The downside was that it wasn't anyone worth speaking of but perhaps they could get some information for her to help her research.
"You know Angie that working all the time does take away from the smaller things in life. Yes I understand you are trying to give us a fighting chance but there are moments where you should just relax and enjoy the little bit of life we have...you still want more blood samples later?"
When Olivia wasn't trying to sneak away on a missions she was usually this ball of energy that never quit. He didn't mind that so much because she usually trained with him and he ensured she was taken care of when Skye was away. It was a rotation but one he could handle. When Skye was out he was in and when he was out Skye was in. A fair trade to keep Olivia out of trouble.
"Lil O! Whatcha been up to rookie? I mean besides bedeviling the other kids and trying to sneak away on missions?"
Her proclamations of wanting action wasn't lost upon him and he decided to tell her a story. One that was close to home.
"So Lil O let me tell you about action. It is something you wish for until you get it. After you get it you don't know what to do with it. That action carries some heavy decision making with it. It sometimes means making life or death decisions. I want you to take that one and think about it Lil O. It means giving up a small piece of yourself every time you make that choice. That is the lesson for today."
He looked at Matt and smiled. He knew that Lil O was sweet on him and he didn't push it so hard. She was a nice kid but not for him. He looked at Angie and smiled at her. Her hair was a mess, she looked tired, and most of all she was beautiful to him. She had for some reason decided to his gruff and hairy ass. She did though see something and right now she needed a break.
"Come on take a break, have a beer, and then if you want to get back to work on things. Until then come with us and help us find some people to get people to safety."
He smiled at her as they did share a bed usually unless he was out on a mission and she usually came to bed late. it was a nice thing to know you had someone. The thing was they didn't flaunt it in front of Skye. That would have rude.
Skye sent out a ping to Catelyn, knowing the woman was probably awake even at this hour in Essex. “Cate...I know it’s late there, but hear me out. I’m desperate. R1K is breaking ground and she’s destroyed the government. I’m going to continue the fight with Wanda, Logan and the others, but I need to get my daughter to safety.
I need you to port here. I can give you the coordinates, but I need you here as soon as you can. I know porting across the Atlantic is dangerous as hell, but I trust you. I just need my baby to be safe when I confront the devil.” She sighed as a single tear trailed along her pale cheek.
***
Olivia meanwhile, folded her arms and gave a heavy sigh “I guess.” She responded to Angie and Logan, shaking her head. “I get your story, Logan, but I know I What I can do. I’ve seen death and I’m not afraid. My mom....she needs help. You and I have trained together, Logan, and I believe that I can be an asset to the team.” She spoke softly as she looked to her uncle.
Matthew shook his head “Livie, the answer is no. I mean, listen to Angie. Do you think you’re mother could bear losing you? She lost your father, and you didn’t know him, but he was a great man. She can’t take another person dying. She needs you safe. You have no idea what is out there. You wanna see a bunch of dead bodies? People missing limbs? Little kids abandoned in the streets? That’s what is happening, and that’s why the adults are going out. WE are saving people, and not just killing the bad guys. Olivia...” he whispered as he put both hands into her shoulders “I used to be a bad guy. Your mom and I were on the opposite side of Logan and Angie. This war brought us together. So, if that’s any indication of how serious this is, you have to have a clue here, sweetheart.”
Olivia closed her eyes before she looked back to Logan and Angie “I get it...it just...it sucks. I don’t want my mother to lose me either, but I’m positive that I’ll be fine. But I get it. I’ll stay. Just PROMISE me that I will get to scout soon?!” She plead with her tired eyes.
Angie gave a warm smile to Logan. It was the type that showed she had heard his words. She knew they often did not get to spend as much time together as they would like. She nodded her head at his statement, "A little break might help. A clearer mind might help figure out a solution to the problem." She paused as he offered more blood for her work. It could do well with the nanotechnology and being able to do what it needs. "A blood sample or two might... be helpful."
She watched as Logan and Matt talked with Olivia. She had to admire the way Logan handled Olivia. He spoke the truth about every time going out there causes them to loose part of themselves with the decisions they make. It was more dangerous than they could imagine. It was also overconfidence that can lead to Olivia getting hurt. They could not afford that right now. She also knew that being a teenager, it was not something you wanted to have pointed out.
"You are right, your mother does need help. We are helping in a couple of different ways. The loss of someone..... can be hard to bear." She left it at that. They each had their fair share of losses, some more than others.
She let Matt speak as things seemed to finally set in with Olivia. There would be a day in which they would need to let Olivia out of the cage, just not today. She had a feeling that she would be bringing Olivia back to life. She gave the young woman a pat on the back as she stepped slightly closer to Logan.
"Soon, but I will leave the exact when to Logan." It was a quick way out. Olivia would respect the timing from him. She thought it was cute the little crush that Olivia had on Logan. She knew where his heart lie as they kept most aspects of their relationship private.
She turned her attention back to Logan as he mentioned a beer. "As long as it's a stout, I think I can squeeze some time in for a beer. Do we have a lead as to where we need to rescue people from?"
Logan looked at Angie and wondered where the hell Bellona got off to today. She was to be helping with training Olivia and such things she was allowed to go on strike missions when they needed a healer. Angie didn't like it but they were short staffed and she had a healing factor which matched his how so she had been missioned rated much to Angie's disagreement.
"Well Olivia I was wondering where your playmate has gotten off to. I mean after all when she ain't breaking something with you its usually my job to fix it with parts we don't have."
When Angie mentioned beer she knew that he always found her favorite when needed and on raids. It was terrible but the mutant haters seemed to have something with gathering large amount of goods to keep for themselves. The other thing that made no sense in his mind. He didn't mind though they got some good stuff from those raids.
"You know I have what you want. I don't drink it all myself. I couldn't besides I can only handle so much dark beer before I get to feeling bloated."
Olivia was asking the wrong person about that scouting mission. That was on her mom.
"I can't make a promise to you that I can't keep. You best talk to the boss lady."
Olivia frowned, but finally just nodded to the two of them. "She'll never say yes, but tomorrow is another day, I guess." She perked up when Logan mentioned the bestie "Oh Bell? I haven't seen her since breakfast. she's probably off smashing something."
Matt laughed "Well, you two are good at that." he smirked as he ran a hand through her fiery red hair, tousling it gently. Looking to Angie and Logan, he nodded forward "I got a call on the walkie an hour ago. It's the gas station about a mile out. Teenagers, one is pregnant. A dog. I'm going for the dog.." he winked playfully "And Olivia, go easy on your mom, okay? You're all she's got. I may be her brother and all, but you're hers..."
Olivia sighed, but nodded in agreement "I'll find Bell..."
Angie patted Olivia on the shoulder as she saw the defeated look of Olivia. "It will take a little bit. Your mom will eventually see reason. It is a mother's job to worry. Just ask Bellona. She might have a story or two."
She smiled over at Logan. It was one of the few times that they fought. Most would find that surprising just by looking at them. She did not mind proving others wrong. They would often give into the other as points had reason. Right now, they were short handed. Bell had a healing factor from both of them. It was really the only reason why she allowed Bellona on missions. It also allowed her to have more flexibility with in the group being one of the medical professionals.
"Tell Bell that she will fix whatever she breaks. Preferably before we get back." She gave the girl a wink.
She turned her attention back to the task at hand. Teenagers with one pregnant should not be left alone. Her mind started to race as she thought about the different possibilities. The beer was sounding better and better as she knew that this was going to be a long day. Bell will be a little pissed that she missed all the fun.
"Logan, Matt we should get going before the trail gets cold. I will grab my bag. Who knows what state we will find them or the dog."
She hurried back to her lab before returning. She always had a fully stocked EMT bag and then some. She didn't want to waste energy on small cuts and bruises. She knew that her hands kept her skills sharp. She adjusted the strap a bit as she looked between the two men after returning.
"Lead the way."
Logan looked at Olivia and nodded along with what Angie was saying to her about missions and her mom relenting sooner or later. She didn't have permission and therefore Logan wasn't about to bring her along and risk the wrath of Fury when she found out her daughter had 'stowed' away when they were going on a mission. That could have been bad for him healing factor or not.
"Sorry Lil O she's right and your mother would skin me just to watch it grow back if I did that for you. Yes please tell Bellona that even though she is named for some goddess of war or whatever she won't survive her mother's anger if she broke something."
He leaned in close and pushed a bag into her hands and smiled and winked at her.
"Oh those are your favorite pop tarts and several five pound bags of gummy bears. Go have fun and get a sugar rush on Uncle Logan. You both need it."
She waited while Angie grabbed her bag and tossed Matt his bag of stuff he had grabbed.
"You know what those are? You don't but they are the travel bottles of booze you like but you can't have it yet. After this run we will celebrate being alive."
He looked at Angie as she came back out tightening her strap.
"Alright Matt lead on you are the one who got this little safari organized and you get to lead it. At your leisure."
With a heavy, dramatic sigh, Olivia obliged “Fine. I’ll find her.” She grumbled under her breath “She probably flirting with the tech guy in back...” she responded as she walked back into the facility.
Matt caught the bag and laughed “Thanks, man! That’s fantastic! And hey, dinner tonight is supposed to be non expired frozen pizza! Hells yes!” He grinned as he grabbed his knife and pistol, putting them into their respective holsters. “Let’s save some lives..”
He looked to Logan and Angie, feeling the emotions in the room. They truly loved each other and it was nice to be around. Matthew had always been a player, but that was before *her* . He always loved her and always will.
“I’m thinking of that cold beverage already...”
Angie smiled as she passed Olivia heading back into the facility. With Bell watching, she felt safer knowing that there would be no stowaways. For as long as she could, she wanted to keep innocent eyes free from the sights of war.
She laughed a little with comment about a cold one from Matt. "I think we all are. No daydreaming as this bag is not going to lighter on its own. Let's move out."
She gave him a teasing wink as she adjusted the bag slightly while following him. Her mind was already racing with the various things that they might be finding. With a bloodhound of a husband, they would hopefully be able to find them quickly. She sent a prayer up in hopes of not running into the enemy.
~*~
It was almost right on cue, Bell had a large smile on her face as she walked back to were her mother most likely was. She had something to exciting news to tell her. It was than that she ran into Little O, as her father calls her. She noticed a bag in the hands of her friend. She took a sniff, wondering what it could possibly be.
"Hey there, sweetcheeks. What ya got in the bag?"
She swung an arm around her shoulders. Despite the regular scolding from her mother, she was in the mood to cause a little mischief. Than again, it was something that she always wanted to do.
A pair of sweaty palms gripped the steel bar as a muscular man pulled himself up. His hazel eyes stared forward to the teleprompter as the news transmission went static.
